Shanghai’s Tangzhen district has been envisioned as a new gateway to the city, being just five kilometers from Pudong International Aiport. Located in the heart of Tangzhen, Modo Mall is part of a 130,000sqm mixed-use development which is composed of a 40,000sqm shopping mall and retail street, 2 soho towers and a 100 meter tall grade-A office tower. Modo mall is directly connected to the subway in the basement, and operates as a key piece and the largest building complex within the regional development.
Modo mall is conceived as a series of interlocking volumes, resulting in outdoor terraces that also act as break out spaces for shops. The terraces provide comfortable outdoor seating areas with views to the surrounding greenery. An undulating folding façade, comprising 1.1 x 1.8m stone panels, was installed on a structural framework in 6 angles. This results in a dynamic moving facade as one approaches the development, creating a distinctive identity in the neighbourhood.
